Where Bai Sao is and what to expect

Bãi Sao, or Bai Sao Beach, is in southeast Phu Quoc. It is often chosen for pale sand, palms and turquoise sea colours. Photographs show what the bay can look like, but do not confirm today’s beach conditions.

Do not confuse Sao with Starfish Beach near Rạch Vẹm in the north. These are different trips. Having Sao in the name does not mean there will necessarily be starfish here. For taxis and navigation, choose Bãi Sao (Bai Sao Beach) and a specific entrance or business.

Seasons: calmer does not mean rain-free

With southwesterly winds, the east coast can be calmer than the west. The Visit Phu Quoc tourism overview highlights June-October as a favourable period for the sea at Bai Sao. However, roughly May-October is the island’s rainier season: calm water and a cloudless day are different conditions.

In winter months, the east coast may feel the northeasterly wind more strongly. But “always calm in summer, always dirty in winter” is too categorical. Waves, seaweed, rubbish and clarity change daily and vary between sections.

Check wind and rain forecasts, recent photographs and on-site announcements. If the sea is rough, choose a walk and a café rather than insist on swimming. Do not treat a shallow entry as proof of children’s safety in every kind of weather.

Admission: the beach, access through a business and vouchers

Visiting an open shore section and using restaurant grounds are different things. The Bai Sao tourism overview describes areas without a general admission ticket and separate paid services. This does not mean unrestricted access through any private gate, car park or restaurant.

In January 2026, Tuổi Trẻ reported an inspection of Chez Dugong, which sold a 60,000 ₫ voucher per person. According to the business, it covered services including parking, rinsing off and a drink up to the stated amount, with the voucher price refunded for restaurant bills over 60,000 ₫. This describes conditions at that time, not a confirmed rate for every day.

Before paying, ask what is currently included, how the voucher is credited or refunded and whether a minimum order applies. Keep the receipt. A “Bai Sao 1” sign alone does not prove all nearby businesses have the same terms.

If you do not want to buy a service package, establish an open path to your chosen section in advance. A general instruction to “go straight and turn left” is unreliable without a precise starting point. Do not go around fences or count on passage through closed grounds.

Loungers, umbrellas and a beach-day budget

Before settling in, check the price per lounger or set, rental duration and whether an umbrella and towel are available. Ask separately about showers, toilets and parking. Being beside a café does not mean everything automatically comes with a drink order.

Travellers report a range of 50,000-150,000 ₫ per sun lounger, but this is not a single current Bai Sao price list. If budgeting that amount, confirm it with your chosen business before renting.

For your budget, add return transport, any service voucher, rentals, food and activities. Compare identical service bundles: free access with separately charged facilities can have a different final cost from a business’s package.

Cafés and drinks

There are food and drink businesses on the beach. Highlands Coffee includes Bai Sao Phu Quoc in its official café list. A directory listing does not replace checking hours and the current menu before a dedicated trip.

Use prices for pho, beer, juice or coconuts from old reviews only as a reason to compare menus. Portion sizes, service and purchase locations differ. Before ordering, check the final cost, especially if you plan to use a voucher as credit.

For seafood, clarify the price per weight or portion, preparation and extras. Agree on the order first, then choose additional dishes. Keep water with you and leave some time for lunch so your beach day does not become a search for a suitable café at the hottest hour.

Activities and a quieter section

Paddleboarding, jet skis, parasailing and photo swings may be offered by individual operators. Availability and operation depend on location and weather. Before paying, check duration, restrictions, included equipment and cancellation terms if the sea deteriorates.

Choose a swimming section away from motorised traffic and follow staff instructions. Do not cross jet ski paths for a photograph. Supervise children constantly even where the entry seems gently sloping.

If music and groups bother you, inspect a neighbouring open section. Advice to go “100-200 metres left” depends on your viewpoint. Walking further does not guarantee cleaner water or confirm unrestricted use of every shore service.

Getting there and back

A convenient family option is a taxi or car with a driver to a specific entrance. Agree on the return meeting point and check the pickup time. Do not count on an app finding an available car immediately at every entrance.

On a scooter, check the approach and parking terms in advance. By bus, check the current route map to the island’s south and the remaining journey to the shore. Do not plan a direct service to the sand without a confirmed stop: the last section may need separate transport.

What to bring and how to spend the day

Water, a hat, sun protection, a towel or mat and dry spare clothes will be useful. Biting insects occur on some sandy sections; apply repellent as instructed and choose a mat instead of lying directly on the sand.

On arrival, first inspect the sea and open section, then arrange a lounger. Leave time for walking, rest and lunch, and choose water activities based on actual conditions. There is no need to fill the day with every available service.
