Rạch Vẹm, Starfish Beach and Bai Sao are different landmarks
Starfish Beach usually means a stretch of the northern coast near Rạch Vẹm. The fishing village with overwater restaurants, departure pier and the shore served by a particular boat may be different locations. First establish exactly where you are going.
Do not confuse this place with Bãi Sao, or Sao Beach, in southeast Phu Quoc. Similar-sounding names do not mean the same location. Show your driver Rạch Vẹm and the agreed pier or business, not just the English label “Starfish Beach”.

When to go and what to expect from the road
Roughly November to April is generally chosen for calmer seas and clearer water. This is a seasonal guideline, not a guarantee: rain, wind and tides can change conditions and visibility on any given day.
Most of the journey follows the island’s roads, but the final stretch to the village includes uneven dirt and gravel sections. Conditions may worsen after rain. Do not rely on a promise of “exactly 1-3 km of bad road remaining”: check the approach conditions before setting out.
A morning departure leaves more time for changing plans and returning. Arriving before 11:00 may suit an unhurried pace, but does not guarantee an absence of groups or cool conditions. Sun protection is useful from the start of the trip.

For a taxi or car with a driver, agree on the drop-off point, waiting time, total price and return meeting point. Waiting on site is one option, not a requirement for every tourist. Another option is a return pickup confirmed in advance.
Do not count on an app finding a car immediately at a remote pier. Save your driver’s contact and arrangements before travelling. If travelling with children or you would rather avoid working out the approach, compare a private car with an organised itinerary that explicitly states its inclusions.
A VinBus trip to Grand World does not itself get you to Starfish Beach: a separate overland journey is needed from there. Before changing transport, check the VinBus map, fare, selected stop and availability of onward transport. Numbers 17/19 and free travel in old advice do not replace a current route.
On a scooter, choose a route based on your experience and road conditions. If the approach is difficult, changing transport is better than trying to ride the last stretch at any cost. Ask the specific place about parking and its price.
VinBus: official route search ↗Boat or on foot: establish the exact destination first
A boat may be offered from the village to another stretch of coast. This is a separate service, not proof that every part of Rạch Vẹm is accessible only by water. A local restaurant describes the village as an ordinary fishing settlement without a general admission ticket; check services on a particular shore section separately.
Before paying, write down whether the price is per person or for the whole boat, whether return travel is included, how long you can stay ashore and where you board for the return. Ask about life jackets, especially children’s sizes, and cancellation in poor weather. Ranges from other people’s trips are not today’s “correct fare”.
The walking route depends on actual access, tides and shore conditions. Do not follow a universal instruction to “turn right from the pier”: there are several piers. Do not go around fences through the water or enter closed areas. If an open, safe path is not confirmed, choose an agreed boat route or another section.

Starfish: observe and photograph without touching
Do not take starfish out of the water, lift them towards the surface, turn them over or arrange them for a photograph. Leave them where you find them and watch your step in shallow water. Explain this rule to children before approaching the water.
NParks warns that starfish have fragile structures that touching can damage, and prolonged time out of water impairs breathing. The claim that “every starfish dies instantly in air” is too categorical. For visitors, the practical rule is simpler: do not touch the animal or test how long it can survive.
Photograph from above or with a camera in a suitable underwater housing without moving the starfish. A beautiful picture does not require holding it, even underwater. Animal numbers are not guaranteed: this is a natural place, not an exhibit with a guaranteed visiting result.

Rạch Vẹm is known for restaurants on decking and platforms by the water. Choose a business using current information, and before ordering clarify the price per weight or portion, preparation and total. Proximity to the sea alone guarantees neither product quality nor a low price.
Swings, hammocks, sun loungers, showers and drinks depend on your chosen section and operating businesses. Do not count on every facility at every drop-off point. Find out the terms of use and parking or lounger charges before settling in.
If you want peace and quiet, inspect the permitted shore section on arrival. Another 200-500 metres does not guarantee cleaner water or confirm open access. Take rubbish away with you and do not leave food on the beach.
Vietnam Tourism: Starfish Beach and Rach Vem ↗What to bring
Drinking water, a hat, sun protection, a towel or mat and footwear for uneven, wet ground will be useful. Use repellent according to the package instructions; insects on the sand depend on the section and conditions.
Protect your phone and documents from water, and save your route and return transport contact. On a boat, swimming ability does not replace a life jacket; on shore, do not assume shallow water is automatically safe for a small child.
An example of an unhurried trip
Morning: leave after checking the weather and approach road, and arrive at the agreed point in Rạch Vẹm. On arrival, check the open path or boat terms, then allow time to observe nature without chasing a must-have photograph.
Towards lunchtime: return to the business chosen in advance, eat and meet your driver. If conditions are unsuitable, shorten the shore visit. Do not add a compulsory visit to several major parks to this outing.
Bãi biển Gành Dầu (Ganh Dau Beach) in the related listings below is another location on the northern coast, not the Starfish Beach marker or a guaranteed alternative starfish spot. For an extra stop, first assess the actual journey time.
Check before setting out
You know the exact pier or entrance, the condition of the final road section, shore access terms, selected service prices and how you will return. The forecast and sea conditions are suitable, and everyone knows animals must not be picked up for photographs.
If you want to add fresh information to the guide, send the trip date, precise section and access conditions through the contact page. This is more useful than a general comment that “access is easy there”, which might refer to a different pier or water level.
