Buses and taxis: the route matters more than the number

VinBus can be convenient for long journeys around the island. Before setting out, open the official search and select Phu Quoc, exact stops and direction. Numbers 17 and 19 in old tips do not mean the bus passes every hotel and reaches every attraction.

Check fares and eligibility for free travel separately. Save the last return service and the route from the stop to your accommodation. If it is inconvenient after an evening show, plan a taxi.

When booking a car, verify its number plate, meeting point and direction of travel. The driver may wait at another accessible entrance or on the opposite side of the road. Clarify the location in the app instead of blindly crossing the road after a map icon.

Motorbikes: documents and the right vehicle class first

Do not choose an electric scooter solely on a promise that “no licence is needed”. Requirements depend on technical class, power and design speed. The government clarification distinguishes a low-powered moped from a motorcycle; the word “electric” alone does not determine licensing conditions.

Before renting, check documents for the specific model, recognition of your driving documents in Vietnam and insurance coverage. An international permit does not replace the required category on your national licence. If conditions are unclear, choose transport with a driver.

Fasten a suitable helmet, obey signs and the speed limits of the particular road. There is no universal tourist rule of “40 km/h everywhere”. Do not drink alcohol before driving: Vietnam applies zero tolerance to alcohol at the wheel. Do not use old fine amounts as today’s table.

Rentals and documents

Before paying, inspect the vehicle with the owner, record damage, and check brakes, lights and return conditions. Write down the deposit amount, rental period and breakdown procedure. For an electric model, find out its range and charging method.

Where possible, agree on a cash deposit or another contractual option instead of leaving your original passport with the rental company. Provide a document copy only for a clear purpose. Save the contract and confirmation of deposit return.

Currency exchange: compare the total, not an attractive rate

Choose a bank or authorised exchange point. A jewellery sign alone does not confirm authorisation to exchange currency. Before handing over money, check the rate, fees and final amount, count the cash and keep the receipt.

Banknote condition and denomination can affect an individual counter’s terms, but new USD 100 notes do not guarantee a permanent 1-2% advantage. Do not exchange your whole budget based on unverified advice.

A transfer to a stranger promising courier delivery of cash should not be treated as equivalent to bank exchange. Do not publish account details, verification codes or photographs of documents in public chats.

Cards and ATMs

Card acceptance depends on the issuing bank, payment network and particular terminal. UnionPay does not guarantee every issued card works in every shop and ATM. Before travelling, ask your bank about restrictions and prepare a backup payment method.

Before withdrawing, read the ATM screen: charges may include an ATM operator fee, your bank’s fee and currency conversion costs. We do not promise zero VPBank fees for every foreign card or a universal limit of 3-5 million ₫: conditions vary.

Choose a well-lit location, cover your PIN and keep the receipt. An ATM beside an open branch makes it easier to seek help if your card is retained, but does not eliminate malfunctions. Do not keep all your money and cards together.

SIM and eSIM: registration and plan conditions

For a physical SIM, choose an official or authorised operator outlet and register it with your own documents. Viettel’s tourist service requests passport details. Do not assume all airport SIMs are unreliable: the seller, registration and a clear package matter more.

Check validity, data allowance, speed restrictions, a local number and tethering. A daily-cap package and a total allowance for the entire period are different products. Read “unlimited” together with its terms.

Before buying an eSIM, check phone compatibility and whether it is carrier-locked. Save the instructions beforehand. If internet does not work, first check the selected data SIM, activation and provider settings; enter an APN using the provider’s instructions, not random advice.

Water and food: what actually helps

Use water from a reliable source; a factory-sealed bottle is convenient for trips. If tap-water safety is unknown, do not use it for drinking, ice or washing food eaten raw. Assess ice by its water source, not merely the presence of a street stall.

Choose thoroughly cooked hot food, wash your hands before eating and pay attention to food storage. A queue of local residents does not guarantee hygiene, and wiping cutlery does not replace safe food preparation.

With diarrhoea, replacing fluids matters; prepare oral rehydration solutions strictly according to the instructions using safe water. Seek medical help for blood in stools, marked weakness, high fever, inability to drink or signs of dehydration.

The term “protein poisoning from overeating seafood” does not explain the cause of feeling unwell. Do not dismiss symptoms as a large portion or treat every situation with the same set of sorbents. Discuss a first-aid kit and personal medication with a doctor before travelling.

Heat, insects and waterside relaxation

Plan shade and breaks, and bring a hat, water and sun protection. Use repellents and household products as instructed: do not spray insecticide indiscriminately over the bed. Keep room food sealed and address insect problems with staff.

On sand, use a mat or lounger. Not every itchy bite can be identified as a “sand flea” without assessment. Seek help for an unusual or severe reaction.

After a sea urchin puncture, leave the water and seek medical assessment, especially with severe pain or remaining fragments. Do not count on vinegar universally dissolving spines, or try to cut deeply to remove them yourself.

Food and shopping: check the pricing unit

For seafood, ask the price per kilogram, 100 grams, item or portion. Check weight, preparation and the total before ordering. For a buffet, check times, drinks, extras and possible leftover-food terms; a total of 200-400 thousand ₫ does not describe every offer.

Do not tie buying fish to a universal 15:30 at an unnamed pier. You need a specific seller, current conditions and suitable storage. Thorough cooking matters more than asking for an undercooked product to keep it juicy.

Compare pepper, peanuts, tea and other gifts by weight, ingredients and expiry date. For pearls, request origin information and a receipt. Neither a farm, market nor supermarket guarantees the best price and authenticity of every item.

Beaches and animals: nature cannot be promised by the clock

Water clarity depends on wind, rain, tides and the particular shore. A morning departure leaves time to spare but does not guarantee no waves, people or rubbish. Do not choose swimming solely on the rule “it is always cleaner before lunch”.

At Rạch Vẹm, do not touch, lift or arrange starfish for photographs, even underwater. At sea, do not feed fish bread or stand on coral. Observing does not require moving animals.

For a boat, agree in advance on the price per person or vessel, return trip and inclusions. An indicative 100-200 thousand ₫ from someone else’s experience is not a compulsory rate for every captain. Protect your phone with a suitable waterproof case, testing it before the trip.

Parks: separate days and the precise ticket

For a thorough visit to Safari and VinWonders, separate days are more convenient. If choosing a combo, check the validity of both admissions: the package name does not automatically mean two separate days.

At Safari, do not bring your own carrots or other animal food. Feeding is allowed only in an authorised programme with feed provided by staff. Follow park rules even if old advice promises savings.

For the water park, bring your own towel with your accommodation’s permission, and check locker and other rental costs against the current price list. Compare tickets by date, height category, food, transfers and cancellation. A permanent 5-10% discount or free voucher cannot be promised for every online order.

Accommodation and shopping before flying home

For a longer trip, you can split accommodation between north and south if that reduces journeys to your main destinations. Two bases are not compulsory: account for packing, check-in time and transport cost.

Kingkong Mart is one option for buying groceries and gifts at labelled prices. Compare a specific basket rather than assuming it is always cheaper and stocks absolutely everything. The status of Dương Đông (Duong Dong)’s old night market in 2026 needs a separate check.

Before buying fruit, liquids and food to take abroad, check airline, transit and destination-country rules. Potential savings on the island do not override baggage and import restrictions.

A checklist for every outing

You have saved the precise place, entrance, current hours, booking confirmation and return route. Your phone has working internet, and you have water and suitable clothes. For Ho Quoc, cover shoulders and knees; for Suoi Tranh, first establish water levels and trail access.
