PHU QUOC · Practical guide

Phu Quoc prices: food and shopping

Fruit, seafood, groceries, street food and everyday purchases: what they cost and where to shop for less.

The same purchase can cost very different amounts across Phu Quoc. Market mangoes, a hotel fruit plate and supermarket cut fruit may differ severalfold. Travellers and residents recommend the day market by the bridge in Duong Dong and local stalls for the lowest food prices. Tourist areas, the Night Market, Grand World and Sunset Town usually cost 1.5-2 times more. Supermarkets are convenient for daily shopping; tourist markets suit an evening walk, dinner and souvenirs.

Fruit: mangoes and seasonal mangosteen

The day market and stalls used by residents generally offer better fruit prices. Mangoes clearly illustrate the difference between areas.

Tourist vendors may initially quote 70,000-100,000 VND per kilogram for mangoes. Compare several nearby stalls before buying.

Mangosteen is highly seasonal: 40,000-80,000 VND per kilogram in season, rising to 100,000-250,000 VND off-season and at the Night Market.

Unpeeled durian costs 80,000-100,000 VND per kilogram at the market. A single tray of flesh can cost the same at the Night Market. Compare weight as well as price.

Loose dried mango costs 100,000-180,000 VND per kilogram. A shop pack weighing 200-500 g can cost 100,000-120,000 VND.

Seafood and fish: market or restaurant?

For self-catering, try the day and fish markets. Restaurant prices include preparation, service and location.

Before ordering, establish whether the price is per kilogram, serving or whole animal. A serving price cannot be compared directly with the market price per kilogram.

Where to shop for less

For fruit, fish and cooking ingredients, use the day market by the bridge in Duong Dong and local stalls.

For daily shopping, try King Kong, Long Beach Market and other supermarkets.

For a stroll, prepared food and souvenirs, visit the Night Market.

For dinner and evening atmosphere, choose Grand World or Sunset Town, allowing for tourist prices.

Compare the same goods in the same units. A kilogram of whole fruit, a pack of cut fruit and a café serving have different prices. The same applies to fresh seafood and a cooked restaurant dish.
